I stepped on a bee walking across my lawn the other day. The stinger itself was miniscule – slender and perhaps ¼ inch long. But despite the small size, I could think of nothing else besides that spot until I had scraped it out!
The same is true in God’s body.
But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 1 Corinthians 12:24-26
When one of us hurts, when one of us grieves, when one of us struggles with temptation, discouragement, bad health or more, it should be that same unthinking reaction – to care for that part of the body, immediately and fully.
In order to get the bee stinger out of my foot, I needed my hands, eyes and even legs to get me to a chair (plus a little girl to fetch a credit card to scrape it out).
So, we need each other in various struggles – different parts, different talents, uniquely situated but each vital. Each person with unique talents and gifts as well as unique opportunities.
- Listening with both head and heart
- Hands to help carry a load
- Laundry baskets full of food
- Wise and honest counsel from God’s word
- Friends that sit and weep with us (or rejoice with us)
The list could go on indefinitely.
I have experienced the privilege of being on the receiving end of such care. But do I notice the opportunities God gives to suffer and serve His body – His people?
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15
2 Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
