When we were first married, we lived in a little house. One of its quirks was that there’d always be one door that couldn’t shut. It would rotate which particular door. The bedroom or garage door were not too bad when they couldn’t close. But the bathroom or front door not closing were far less convenient! Why did this happen? Well, this lovely little home was built on pillars, which shifted with the Tennessee rain and heat!
The foundation affects the entire structure.
The same is true spiritually. Jesus’s parable of the wise and foolish builders states it plainly:
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” ~ Matthew 7:24-27
Or as the children’s song so aptly puts it: “The foolish man’s house went SPLAT!”
It’s so very human to build our lives on lesser things, yet anything less than Christ is not a firm foundation. When the storms of life come (and they will), the whole structure will collapse. Money is subject to thieves, decay and inflation. Even the very best people are flawed and will inevitably fall short. Acceptance from others is sickle and fails to fulfill the soul deep longings within us.
Only Jesus offers stability.
Only Christ is a firm foundation.
11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. ~ 1 Corinthians 3:11
