On silent wings, he cut across my path, majestic in the early morning light. His flight was effortless, his eye sharp, seeing far more in the forest than I could. He alighted on a branch far above me, grace and power both evident in his brown speckled body. I marveled at this bird of prey in the silence of dawn, thinking of the Lord and how scripture sometimes compares him to birds of prey.
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. Psalms 91:3-4
The Lord covers our vulnerabilities with his own self. He is close by us, well aware of the dangers we face spiritually and otherwise. He does not abandon us but rather covers us.
4 You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Exodus 19:4
God reminds the Israelites to remember what he had done in the past. This remembering indeed strengthens our faith in the present moment, trusting him to provide for today, as he did yesterday and the many days before.
Speaking of his people Israel, God says
Like an eagle that stirs up its nest,
that flutters over its young,
spreading out its wings, catching them,
bearing them on its pinions,
12 the LORD alone guided him,
no foreign god was with him. Deuteronomy 32:11-12
God is in the habit of doing for his people what they cannot do themselves. God is the one who lifted Israel up. God is the one who cared for Israel when no one else did.
Surely today the Lord still lifts up his people and cares for them. When we cry out to God, He can hold us aloft even and especially when we cannot hold ourselves.
