Then Sings My Soul

He [King Solomon] also spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his songs were 1,005. He spoke of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of the wall. He spoke also of beasts, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fish. And people of all nations came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and from all the kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom. ~ 1 Kings 4:32-34

Of course, Solomon did have a slight advantage over us – God made him the wisest man to ever live! But as I read the above scripture, I am struck with how much wisdom can be gained by spending time in God’s nature.

We see the physical seasons of nature and their purpose – and realize anew the importance of emotional and spiritual seasons of our lives.

We see the glories of God’s flowers and grass, which are “here today and tomorrow are thrown in the fire” and realize how much more valuable we must be, if he so clothes them (Matthew 6)!

We see how God provides in the small details of little birds and other creatures – and are humbled to realize that not only does he provide for us but that we are His children.

We see the silent, hardworking ant who toils away with greater self discipline than most of us can muster in a month!

And that only brushes the surface…

Yes, of course, God’s word helps us to know him better. But I think His nature, His creation, helps us to see part of Him too. After all, how does the Good Shepherd “restore our soul” (Psalm 23)? By leading us by still waters and making us lie down in green pastures.

When we surround ourselves with what He has made, we can see Him more clearly as He is. And then we can praise Him more as we ought.
