For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. ~ Psalm 62:1-2
We search for answers and fulfillment in many places.
We scroll our newsfeeds and post on social media. We chat with our friends and browse Pinterest and YouTube. We delve deep into books or immerse ourselves in music or movies. We fill our time with things and activities, family and friends, work and clubs, games and events.
Many of them are good and meaningful. Many of them help others.
But somehow, still, we find ourselves empty. We feel drained or sad, stressed or tired. We feel like we are missing something. And our soul yearns for that which is deeper, more vital.
I think, sometimes, we mistake our emotions as the root. They are instead a symptom trying to urge us homeward – our yearning, our longing, our restlessness is for God.
He alone can satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. He alone can still our greatest fears. He alone is the one who sees us in our darkest moments. He is the one who walks beside us, in joy as well as in brokenness. He alone can touch the depths of our souls.
May we learn to fill our hearts first with him. It is within him that we find rest, salvation, and life.
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” (Augustine)
