Words are funny things. They have the power to stick with us decades after they have been spoken, yet instead of carrying the good and encouraging words, our natural tendency is to carry the weight of those who criticize. No matter how untrue those voices are, sometimes our own hearts are overwhelmed by them.
Yet God is rich in mercy and love, in truth and grace, yearning for us to reach out in our need and find him present. And when I have trouble even naming the burdens of my heart, his voice can soothe my anxious fears.
“I, I am he who comforts you;
who are you that you are afraid of man who dies,
of the son of man who is made like grass ~ Isaiah 51:12
The Lord reminds us here of two important truths. He offers us comfort, knowing what it is our hearts need. But he also reminds us that there are bigger things to fear than people. Eternity should weigh heavier in our lives.
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. ~ Galatians 1:10
Sometimes I forget who it is I should be pleasing! It’s the Lord’s approval that counts above anyone else’s.
Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. ~ 1 Timothy 4:12
I cannot go self-righteously tearing through life, espousing that I’m seeking God’s approval without some serious self-examination. What is my own example like? Do I live according to how the Lord wants? If I want to not be despised, I must live by Godly example.
for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God. ~ John 12:43
Our hearts deceive us so well. We must take care to avoid the trap the Pharisees laid for themselves. They were convinced they were serving God. Instead, they failed to see His only precious son.
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. ~ 2 Timothy 1:7
It is helpful to remember we are not alone in this endeavor. Our lives no longer need to be dictated by fear but rather by the Lord’s love and strength.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. ~ Matthew 6:33
Do I trust the Lord? Will I serve him and let go of my tightfisted worries, allowing him to provide? This practice is a daily exercise.
We may not please everyone. In fact, we cannot. But if we set ourselves to please God first, we will have taken care of what is most important.
