Being hospitable takes work. It is also incredibly rewarding. But sometimes it is a little overwhelming to actually get started. Here are some things God has taught me about hospitality that have helped myself to get over the mental hurdle and just try:
Things I’ve Learned about Hospitality
- It doesn’t need to be fancy.
- Double what you’d make your own family.
- Stressing about the house makes things about YOU. Sitting and being with your guests allows hospitality to be about developing relationships instead.
- Being available is more important than having an ideal set up.
- Start with one person (or one family).
- Allow them to help however they want. There are not trophies handed out for those who never let anyone else help!
- Be intentional and reasonable with your own energy. Don’t invite a crowd on a weekend you’re already rushing around. Plan a meal for when you will have the physical and emotional energy to be present.
- Bringing a meal to someone or taking someone out for a coffee or a meal counts too.
- Involve your kids: setting the table, making the dessert, greeting at the door, etc.
We know we should be hospitable. But when we take a step in faith and actually practice it, we find that instead of blessing others, we ourselves are the ones rewarded! May we each seek to show hospitality in the opportunities God grants us.
Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. ~ Romans 12:13
