It is hard to adequately bend the human mind to the concept of an infinite God. Yet he does not need me to understand all of him in order to trust him and know him.
And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” ~ Revelation 4:8
Our God is an infinite God – he was (he has always existed), he is (he now exists) and he is to come (he fills the future just as fully!). There is nothing left. He permeates all of time – but also all our fragile, human selves.
He surrounds us:
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore. ~ Psalm 125:2
His great arms are underneath us, holding us up
The eternal God is your dwelling place,
and underneath are the everlasting arms. ~ Deuteronomy 33:27a
And we are covered by him:
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. ~ Psalm 91:4
We are enfolded within His embrace. Wrapped. Held. He is the infinite God who is near to His people. He carries our load. He knows our hearts. And yet He also rules eternity. A God who can enfold us entirely can surely be trusted with our hearts, our fears, our futures.
How can we but trust Him?
And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. ~ Psalm 9:10
