I love to watch waterfalls, even small ones. There is something about the overwhelming rush of the water. The cliff cannot contain it and so it bursts over the side. Very few things can go up a waterfall. It’s a logical fallacy. There is too much of the water flowing down for anything to creep back up. The rush and fullness of the water is what keeps the stream flowing down and not up.
I think, perhaps, that is God’s design for our heart. Yes, sometimes we need to empty out, to let go (see my blog post here). But when we have cleared our hearts of the dross, what must we place there instead? What should our hearts overflow with?
Here’s a short list:
Joy, Peace and Hope
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. ~ Romans 15:13
Good
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. ~ Luke 6:45
Love for one another
And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you ~ 1 Thessalonians 3:12
Knowledge of God’s Will
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding ~ Colossians 1:9
Light
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light ~ Matthew 6:22
Gladness
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’ ~ Acts 2:28
the Fullness of God
And to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. ~ Ephesians 3:19
Wisdom
Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. ~ Acts 6:3
The Spirit
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit ~ Ephesians 5:18
We often remember the gift God gave us in the cross (as we should). But sometimes, we forget that He continually gives us the gift of Himself, living inside us, changing our hearts for the better, and helping fill us – with His Spirit. May we allows the sweetness, the richness and the fullness of His spirit to fill us to overflowing.
All to Jesus I surrender,
Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power,
Let Thy blessing fall on me.
I surrender all…
