God with us

In an age where we can have hundreds of facebook “friends,” where we can have work circles, church families, friends, neighbors, workout clubs and mom groups, we still struggle with feeling alone.

And loneliness is a powerful, awful, gaping thing. My dad used to say, “Never underestimate the power of loneliness.” The older I have grown, the truer I have seen that to be, in part because in loneliness, the devil whispers his lies and we are more apt to listen.

And yet, even when we feel loneliness (and it is a very real, very hard thing to bear), God speaks clearly, beautifully and repeatedly throughout the Bible. Here are just a few verses (you can find many more):

Fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. ~ Isaiah 41:10

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
    and the flame shall not consume you. ~ Isaiah 43:2

 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” ~ Matthew 28:18-20

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). ~ Matthew 1:22-23

I am not alone, nor have I ever been. God Himself is with me and He is enough.
