The earth awakens
Shaking off the heavy sleep of winter.
I blinked once,
And now the early trees are brushed with white, light green and even pink.
It is a surprise when I lift up my head;
I expected emptiness
And instead found life.
Silently, the earth produces beauty:
Vibrant scarlet and violet and gold,
The bold curves of tulips,
The nodding cheerful faces of daffodils,
The graceful fronds of hyacinth,
All delight to turn their faces toward the sun.
The muck of the earth
Is outwardly ugly,
And certainly filthy,
But it is within the messy confines
That old life is broken down
And becomes fodder to the new.
The Lord can work spring in any of us,
After a winter of the soul.
He breaks down the secret sins we hold
And satisfies us with the richness of himself,
Helping establish roots that no one else can see,
Anchored in the assurance of him.
We too may be surprised one glorious morning
With joy and life
Where we had not expected it.
Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,
that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. ~ Psalm 90:14
Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning. ~ Psalm 30:5
