Top 3

I sat in a very thought-provoking class a few months ago. First, our teacher urged us to come up with the top 3 sermons/classes we had ever heard. This was a challenge. Although I have sat through countless lessons and learned much, it was hard to come up with specific ones I thought were best.

After a few minutes, she asked us to think of the three people who influenced us most spiritually. This was far easier!

Why? Not because teaching is so unimportant (it is vital to the life of a Christian!). But rather because we are wired for relationship. The best teaching is done through love, through relationship.

It’s a beautiful thing to think of those who have influenced us spiritually. We are blessed indeed if we have people in our lives who help us get to heaven.

But it’s convicting when we think of our own influence. Am I helping others get to heaven? Perhaps I am not a great preacher or lecturer, but do I use the influence I have for eternal good? Perhaps, I am not the influence I’d like to be or should be.

Think of those in your own life who have mentored you. What did they do? In a paraphrase of 1 Cor 11:1, be imitators of those spiritual mentors as you have seen them imitate Christ.

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. ~ Hebrews 13:7
