Surprise Lilies and God’s Goodness

Lycoris squamigera are aptly known as surprise lilies or even resurrection lilies. For most of the year they lie dormant underground, oblivious to little footsteps pounding over grass or lawn mower blades whirring noisily. And then quite suddenly, seemingly overnight, they burst forth on a single slender green stem to unfurl a delicate, shapely pink lily. They are lovely, perhaps mostly because their beauty is so unexpected, a feast for the eyes.

I suspect the Lord does the same in each of our lives. In our very human struggles, we find it hard to find beauty or light or joy. But if we look, if we ask to see, suddenly, overnight, he can bring forth good, even from seemingly fallow ground. It may not change our trials nor our responsibilities. But it can give hope and joy to a heart thirsting for God.

Weeping may tarry for the night,
but joy comes with the morning.
~ Psalm 30:5

I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
~ Psalm 27:13
