How to Be a Good Listener

We love a friend who is a good listener. But it is often hard to be one ourselves. Here is a list of some simple reminders for all of us:

How to Be a Good Listener

Put away distractions, especially your phone.

Slow down.

Watch their body language; respond with your own. Lean forward, nod your head, show that you care about what they say.

Stop the task you are working on to look at the person. This is especially important with children. Often, they have something they want to communicate and will come flying in (while you are cooking or cleaning or trying to write a blog). They want to tell you right then! Listen, for if you don’t, they will eventually stop trying to talk to you.

Ask open-ended questions. Give space for them to respond.

Don’t try to plan what you’ll say next. Instead, listen to what the person has said. Sometimes it is helpful to rephrase what they have just said.

Let go of the desire to say “your piece.”

Pray about becoming a better listener.

Think of someone you know who listens well. Imitate them as they imitate Christ.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger ~ James 1:19
