Rejection and Belonging

I will make my dwelling among you, and my soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. ~ Leviticus 26:11-12

Whether we are willing to admit it or not, we all fear rejection. We understand at some level that we are not what we ought to be, even on our best days. Knowing this, it can be difficult to open ourselves to relationship, for in loving another, we lay ourselves open to the possibility of rejection. Yet without that vulnerability, there cannot be real relationship.

But God has already taken the first step. He offers us a place to belong: with him. He has always desired his people – to be with them, to live among them, to be theirs and for us to be his as well. He is not surprised by our foibles and sins. He knows us intimately and welcomes us still.

The CSB renders this verse in Leviticus poignantly:

“I will place my residence among you, and I will not reject you.”

What a precious gift to belong to such a God!

May we not reject him either.
