While It Is Still Day

John 9:4-5 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

“We must work the works of him who sent me while it is still day.” In other passages, Jesus speaks of this same idea with a different phrase: “his hour.” And we each have an “hour” in our lives, the point at which our life culminates and then ends. Older people sometimes have a keener weight of it – the knowledge that we may not have much time left. Jesus, of course, was no elderly person cognizant of his waning time but rather the son of God with a very clear picture of his purpose and God’s will.

Our time is not as weighty as that of Jesus. My works are not as great, nor will they be as influential. That is as it should be. The disciple is not greater than her master. And yet, we each must “work the works of him who sent us while it is day.” God made us, has given us work to do, and a limited time frame. None of us is promised tomorrow. I think of the brevity of life for all people – cancer, car accidents, injuries, illness. More time is not guaranteed.

While we still have time, we must do what we can, say the things we are still able to, and be with the people who are precious to us. Each of us has words to say and people we need to love, teach and influence that only we can say and do. Are we taking that time?

Ephesians 5:15-16 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Colossians 4:5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.
