Some things are important. Others are temporary.
Two nights ago, a tornado came through our town, flitting, moving, hailing. About fifteen minutes prior, the wail of tornado sirens split the night, and my husband and I grabbed what was truly important: two little children. They stumbled into their little rainboots, bundled in their fuzzy blankets, sweet with the smell of sleep still on them. Then we were on our way to our friends’ nearby home with an underground shelter. There we rode out the storm.
Some moments we struggle to see what’s important. We waste our time and energies on things that don’t matter. We are distracted, petty, selfish, and tired.
But in this moment, all was clarified. With all the stuff in our home, all the rich blessings, all the technology, we knew there were only two things we needed to get: our children and each other.
For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? ~ Matthew 16:26
What’s important in life? What matters eternally? Sometimes in the mundane moments of life we forget. Perhaps we need these times to remind us of what matters and what doesn’t.
May we each learn to live all our moments for what matters most.
