God Leads Us Home

You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed;
    you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. ~ Exodus 15:13

We find this line in the song of Moses immediately following the crossing of the Red Sea. The people had witnessed God’s superiority to the Egyptian “gods” with the plagues, and they had been delivered from the grasp of Pharaoh’s army. And yet, we too can glean some wisdom from these words today (1 Corinthians 10:1-11).

“Your steadfast love”

God’s love, unlike our own, never fails. He doesn’t tire or get snippy. His love never quits.

“You have led in your steadfast love”

God leads us, if we will only follow! But he does not lead as the world does. He leads not in arrogance nor anger nor chaos nor strife. He leads us in love.

“you have redeemed

I have been redeemed! My sins taken care of, the price paid.

“you have guided them by your strength”

We don’t have to rely on our own strength but God’s! Our meager supply will always be inadequate, but the Lord’s strength will carry us.

“you have guided them”

Sometimes we forget that we need the Lord’s guidance. I am not the one in charge, nor the one with omniscience. I cannot get to heaven on my own. I need the Lord for that.

“your holy abode

Of course an abode, according to dictionary.com is “a place of residence; a house or home.” We are not headed to any earthly destination. We are headed to God’s home, where we, too, can be welcomed… home.
