Lay down your tired head
And close your weary eyes.
Let your breathing slow
While I sing a lullaby.
The day we’ve lived together,
It’s gone and been let go.
Let your limbs grow heavy
And your mind begin to slow.
The sun is sinking fast
In a glory of God’s colors,
Our time too goes fast,
Love and chaos all ablur.
They say the days are long
And that the years are short.
But sometimes I feel time
Spinning too fast past this work.
I make mistakes,
My temper flares,
And I’m not always wise.
But there is a God above
Whose grace is multiplied.
To me, to you, to anyone,
Who bends their will to His,
He is the anchor of my heart,
a love much stronger still.
And so, Child, rest in Him,
Trust he will provide
Sweet slumber and sweet dreams
For the future and tonight.
May you learn to know his name
May it rest sweet upon your lips
Sweeter still inside your heart
A hidden treasure rich.
May you grow bold in faith and strong
To face the deadly foe
Who will throw lies and twisted truths
To try to make you go
Away from Him who made you
And who keeps calling still,
The one who knows you better
Than either of us can tell.
May you know you’re not alone,
No matter how dark night grows.
May you rest safely in his promise
That He will never go.
Never, never, never
He will not leave nor turn
Once you place your hand in His
Within you His light will burn
To light all the dark places
That threaten and trip you up
Keep humbly turning your heart heavenward
And he will lift you up.
So child, rest your weary head
Upon your bed this night.
Breathe deep and slow, my love
Rest safe in your heavenly Father’s might.
