I have been teaching our K-2nd grade class lately and last night’s lesson was on Daniel. He was an exile in a foreign land. He was trustworthy, wise, competent and righteous – and the cause of great envy on the part of many of the other officials. They instigated a law against praying to anyone but the king, but Daniel of course was faithful:
When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously. Then these men came by agreement and found Daniel making petition and plea before his God. ~ Daniel 6:10-11
One can almost hear their gleeful cackles as they “catch” Daniel praying. I greatly admire Daniel’s tenacity and courage. He was no one’s fool – and yet he still prayed just as he had in the past, for the most important factor – the Lord – had not changed. And of course it was the Lord who saved Daniel:
My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm ~ Daniel 6:22
Daniel’s faith in the Lord was both demonstrated and strengthened by his habit of prayer. Prayer is essential to the lives of every believer. It is a reminder that our lives depend on God’s power and not our own.
So in order to help teach a little more about prayer, I made this little booklet about praying for my class. I thought I’d share it here for any who might find it useful:
Please click here for the “When We Pray to God” book.
You may find it helpful to print it on cardstock, laminate, and then bind it together.
